With deep sadness, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) mourns the passing of its Honorary President, Steen Christensen. A devoted Danish public servant, Mr. Christensen served as President of the General Assembly of the BIE for two terms, between 2015 and 2019.

Steen Christensen’s dedication to fostering mutually beneficial ties and advancing international cooperation marked his career.

Steen Christensen, 1974-2024

After graduating from the University of Copenhagen in 1973 with a Master of Law, Mr. Christensen embarked on his professional journey serving Denmark’s Ministry of Business. He represented Denmark with honour on the world stage, participating in and leading Danish delegations during significant trade negotiations and at key international instances, where his expertise and diplomatic finesse earned him widespread respect and admiration among his peers.

Having been appointed Denmark’s representative to the BIE in 2000, Mr. Christensen became one of the Organisation’s most engaged Delegates. As President of the Rules Committee and the Executive Committee, he demonstrated a profound commitment to the values of the BIE and of Expos, particularly in fostering global dialogue and exchange. Leading several Enquiry Missions to evaluate Expo candidates and as President of BIE General Assembly, Mr. Christensen earned the profound respect of BIE delegates and Expo teams for his astuteness, kind spirit and scrupulous fairness.

In addition to his activity within the BIE, Mr. Christensen played a pivotal role developing Denmark’s participation in Expos, proudly representing his country, its values and its innovations, notably at Specialised Expo 2008 Zaragoza, at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, and at Specialised Expo 2012 Yeosu.

The BIE and all those who worked with Mr. Christensen will remember him with respect and gratitude.

During this difficult time, our deepest condolences go out to Mr. Christensen's family, friends, and colleagues.
